‘Party hard but work harder’

Young, chic designer Surily Goel is in town for the Chivas Studio event. Dressed in a sexy, flowy dress from her own collection, Surily says she is very excited to be in the city for the first time. Her collection will showcase metallic accents with a palette ranging from pastels moving to navy blues and blacks. “I have never showcased in Bengaluru and I am very excited,” she says. Asked about achieving so much fame at such a young age, Surily adds that she still has a long way to go. “I don’t have a sense of achievement as yet.”

The designer who is known for her flowy garments has even managed to make Zayed Khan look cool in Blue. “I just made his look casual without him trying very hard. I think that’s the catch.” And future projects that she’s looking forward to? “Chance Pe Dance where I’ve designed Genelia’s clothes,” she says promptly. “I am generally asked to design in a film where they need a style statement.”

Does she then feel it’s a different ball game designing for films and for retail? “Yes definitely. I design for an actor based on the tight brief I have been given and I need to work around their body,” she confesses.

Surily feels georgettes and jerseys are perfect for her brand mantra. “To get a real sense of feminity, and drape, I use these fabrics to accentuate the right parts of your body.”

Having studied abroad, does she feel it gives her that extra edge in the market? “I think it makes a slight difference. But I feel education is always important. You need to get your basics right first.”

The trends for the upcoming season according to her are a lot of colour and movement. “Shimmer, sequins, dull gold coupled with neon is what I feel will be in.” She will be showcasing her Flapper dresses at the show “There is a lot of movement in them too,” she adds.

When asked about her favourite muse, Surily feels Preity Zinta is only a good friend who she is still learning from. “Outside India, I would love to dress up Madonna,” she adds diplomatically. “Basically, anyone who keeps reinventing themselves. Ageing with grace is very important for me.”

Surily’s advice for youngsters who want to make it big – “Party hard but work harder. Remember to balance the two.”
