Meera Kadhiravan, a former associate of intense filmmakers like Balu Mahendra, Thangar Bachchan and Lohita Das is debuting with a film titled Aval Peyar Tamizharasi being produced by Moserbaer. The movie has already created a buzz with its participation in international festivals including the Dubai Film Festival.
A well-known writer, Meera having worked in both media, says he has understood the pulse of today’s audience and delivered a realistic film.
The title makes one believe the story centers on the heroine, but Meera explains, “The story is about a person Jothy Murugan played by Jai and his recalling his love, this forms the crux. The story has been narrated from his point of view.” Jai is portrayed in three different stages of his life. Did he require special make-up? “I chose Jai because he has a mobile face and flexible body that can be moulded to any age,” says Meera. Jai shed about 10 kilos for his role as a college student, then gained some weight to portray a 27-year-old and finally grew a long beard and thick locks when the character turned middle aged.
“We never used any wigs or computer graphics. Everything is natural. Jai has worked very hard for his role,” says Meera. About his debut, he says, “I won’t say it is an offbeat script. Though it is not a formula film, I have incorporated all commercial elements without compromising on realism and I am sure family audiences would lap it up.”
About the new girl Nandhagi, he says he wanted someone simple who understands the language. “Nandhagi fitted the bill. I selected her after she auditioned. I did a pre-trailer with her and showed it to my mentor Balu Mahendra sir. It was he who strongly recommended this girl”. The movie, which was shot extensively in Thirunelveli, Mumbai and Pune, is slated for February 26 release.
