‘All izz well’ in college campuses

The cool, lazy “Aal izz well” from 3 Idiots and the intensely romantic statement “I see you” denoting a spiritual connect between two lovers in Avatar are the latest catchphrases among youngsters today. These phrases seem to have caught on like wildfire in college campuses in the city.

We’ve also had our own phrases from Kollywood films which caught the fancy of many. Remember, Pigs go in a group, but lion always stand alone, from Shivaji?

So, why do youngsters take to these cinematic phrases in such a big way? For, media professional Ashwin Kumar, it is all about saying a lot in a few words. He explains, “It is boring to use “I love you” again and again. As “I see you” means a lot more than just “I love you”, quite a few of my friends started using it and it’s working. As this sentence means more than just “love you”, it surely makes your partner understand without even explaining how much he/she is loved.”

It also acts as the ultimate destressor, say some youngsters. Raajesh Kumar. N. S, media student from University of Madras points out, “Whenever one of us is frustrated in our group, we just say “Aal izz well,” as a status message on Twitter and Facebook so that it lightens up a potential serious situation and spreads a positive energy. People relate to the situation in the movie and it makes one feel happy.”

We also use dialogues like, “Neenga thagga thaganu MGR maadiri minreenga,” (You look as bright and fair as MGR) to poke harmless fun at someone who has a slightly dark complexion. As that dialogue is used in a funny way in the movie, no one will take it seriously. Says actor Vivek, “Youngsters are our target audience for these catchy lines. Though, they might use similar lines it catches on more when it appears on cinema.”

Term it...

* Thailavaruna bayapada koodathu - Padikathavan (If you are a boss, you shouldn't get scared)

* Saamikitta thaan santhaama pesuva, saakadainga kitta illa -Vettaikaran
(patience is only for god and good people, not for the bad.)

* Kaadal aayasutta vada maadiri, yaaru vena thookitu pogalaam, aana friendship, andha vadaya sutta aaya maadiri yaarum thookitu pogamaatanga - Mapillai (Love is like grandmom’s vada, anybody can lift it. But friendship is like grandmom, nobody will take her)
