Learning from the best

A day-long playwright workshop was conducted for budding writers at Villa Marie College. Mass communication students that attended were completely focussed on the workshop, while Mother Nature ensured that the day was sunny and pleasant. Mahesh Dattani, a National Award winner, spent his last afternoon in the city teaching the students the important characteristics of a playwright. He also shared a few personal experiences as a director. “Success does not come easy in life,” said the English play wright.

Scenes from 3 Idiots, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Agneepath were discussed to understand the importance of continuity in a film. “I personally enjoyed the scene writing session because it made me think from another writer’s perspective,” said Shabahat Tahseen, a final year M. Comm student. The afternoon session was peppered with original and fun writing exercises, where students were asked to weave stories using various characters and scenarios given by the peer group. “I can differentiate between various scripts now and work on improving my writing skills as well,” said Tanvi Goel, an M. Comm student. “Character revelation seems simple for me now,” added Sanober Tumbi, a final year
M. Comm student.
