A holy footprint

A holy footprint

With a blend of Catholic and Muslim architecture, The Chapel of the Ascension in Jerusalem is said to contain the right footprint of Jesus, which he is supposed to have left behind while he ascended to heaven.

It holds great religious importance as it is purported to be the site from where Jesus ascended to heaven 40 days after his resurrection.

Situated near the top of Mt. Olives, the Chapel of the Ascension was originally erected by Queen Helena in 392 AD as a part of a vast monastery complex. There is also a 62 m high bell tower, which was built to symbolise the ascension and was the first Christian bell to operate in Jerusalem.

In 1187, the church was turned into a mosque by the Muslim ruler Saladin and remained one but with access allowed to Christians. The church near the main chapel is called the Pater Noster Church.
