When Latvia’s lakes and rivers freeze over with thick ice, you begin to notice how many ice fishermen there are in Latvia, as they come out in droves during the winter season. The ice-fishing season in Latvia usually lasts until the early spring. Around Riga, the most popular ice-fishing spots are on Jugla and Kisezers lakes, the Bullupe estuary, the Lielupe and Daugava rivers and the Gulf of Riga. However, ice fishing can be done in most other domestic waters that have been frozen over. All you need is patience and the necessary bait and equipment. There are several places in the Riga area that restock their waters, and where people can ice-fish and spend the night. Most places also feature a sauna, where fishermen can warm up after a cold day. Two of these are located in the village of Upesciems near Riga, called “Alberta diki” and “Petera diki”. There are also people on hand at both of these places to teach people how it’s done.
