The world’s in your pocket

The world’s in your pocket

Mobile phones need not just be a medium with which you can chat with pals, update your Facebook status and so on. They can be great utility items as well. Says Snigdha Dhyani, a Class X student, “Of course, my phone is used to chat with friends but I also use it for calculations, setting reminders and connecting with my tutors and friends for any clarifications. I know that being on the phone 24x7 is not a good idea, but whatever time you spend on it can be quality time if you use it right.”

Well, who doesn’t love his or her cellphone? But there are more reasons to appreciate it other than the fact that it keeps you in touch with those who matter in your life. In fact, a mobile phone can actually help you in your studies. “A cellphone is a really good organiser,” says Ashish Bhatia, computer geek and publishing consultant.

How? If one looks at its user-friendly features such as setting reminders and its alarm feature — that’s the first step towards managing your time well! You can use it to set yourself a schedule for everyday activities and alarms can be set for particular hours of the day so that you are reminded to do your work at the times scheduled by you. Calendars on cellphones can be used to remind you when projects and assignments are due. “A cellphone can keep your schedule, it can store your date sheets, time-tables and stuff like that. And what’s more, its online features can help you check your mail or log on to websites to get some reference material, as well as ascertain your exam results,” says Bhatia.

An interesting yet often overlooked feature is the mobile phone’s audio power. Depending on the memory capacity of your phone, it can be as invaluable as an audio tool, especially if it’s equipped with a voice recorder. You can use it to remember difficult terms or words or even practise foreign languages! Young and smart users of today may use their hand phones for conference calls and group studies while they sit at home.

Talking of other value-added features, especially for those in higher classes, Anshul Negi, a student, has something unique to share. Inspired by his father who often runs presentations from his phone, Anshul gets hard-to-get illustrations for an assignment from his textbook. “I click a picture of an illustration on my phone and upload it on to my desktop using a memory card, Bluetooth technology or a simple USB cable! It is nothing but connecting the machine with traditional study mediums such as books,” says the geek.

Yes, technology has advanced, so don’t let it leave you behind!
