These 16-year-olds have their eyes on being world champions. Although, Ritul Chatterjee and Vennam Jyoti Surekha, who trained in archery at Vijayawada, have already made their mark. Ritul started practicing archery with a bamboo shoot bow and arrow and today is the winner of a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. “I owe my achievement to my guru Lenin,” he says.
Jyoti, who is also a swimmer, mastered archery in just five years. “Being a woman has never been a problem for me. Doors opened easily. I had always wanted to be a sportsperson and put India on the world map,”she adds. Jyoti also mentions, “Korea is the world champion and very soon we will get the position.” These kids were trained under international archer and Indian coach Cherukuri Lenin. Lenin passed away recently in a road accident and his students now aim to make him proud.
