Deepan Sivaraman has come up with a new experimental work for the fourth International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFoK) in Thrissur scheduled from Wednesday.

Deepan, a native of Kodakara, Thrissur is an award-winning theatre director who teaches at Wimbledon College of Art in London.

He will stage Peer Gynt, by renowned playwright Henrik Ibsen. The protagonist, Peer Gynt, who is about to die requests God for a second chance in life.

The Devil also lays claim to Peer's heart. God indeed grants him a second chance. Peer grab his heart and runs away, with both God and the Devil following.

The story will be told through puppets, moving objects, imaginative costumes, ritualistic actions accompanied by innovative Indian music.

Though Ibsen wrote the play about a century ago, Deepan is trying to present it in the current Indian context. “No longer is this the ideal land of Gandhian ethics and moral standards.

It now stands at the crossroads where all existing notions become meaningless,” says Deepan. Over the last 15 years, Deepan has designed 35 plays and directed 11 productions in India and Europe.
