Ever since one can remember, astrology was a field chosen only by men, but now, the fairer sex is showing an equal amount of interest perhaps even more so.

Dancer-turned-astrologer Neeraja Rajendran always had a fascination for astrology ever since her childhood and out of sheer curiosity and unpleasant personal experiences, she decided to master this subject as well as the various branches connected to it.

Neeraja, who has been in this field for the past 12 years, says, “A woman is sometimes hesitant to consult a male astrologer and does not open up completely. But, when a woman or a girl comes to me seeking remedies, she feels comfortable enough to discuss her problems for only then can an astrologer guide a client properly.”

Another lady astrologer, Sujanthi K.K. decided to take up this subject as she wanted to know more about astrology. In addition to being a housewife, Sujanthi is now an astro consultant too.

Sujanthi’s clientele includes newly married couples and college-going students, who are worried about their careers or want quick solutions for their relationship-related problems.

Following her own set of equations in astrology Neeraja says that she did not observe the traditional concept of astrology that was practised in the olden days. “I have often heard people say that astrology consultation must not be done after sunset, but I follow my own intuition,” she explains.

Aambika Pyarilal, another astrologer says that her research-based study on this subject was what turned her into a successful astrologer. Aambika is a postgraduate in English and is currently learning psychology to study the in-depth facets of human mind and behaviour.

“Ninety per cent of my clients come to me seeking solutions for adultery. I feel there is a link between human psychology and astrology and so I decided to study psychology too,” says Aambika.

Making her presence felt in a male-dominated career, Aambika says, “Before venturing into this field, I consulted many male astrologers but they failed to understand the problems facing a woman.” Aambika has mastered astrology from different gurus and takes classes in the subject (at the primary level) at Edapally in Kochi.

Although these women have made astrology their profession, most of them hold similar views about the monetary aspects. Neeraja pointed out that the real dakshina is when a client believes in you and feels happy with your prediction and that makes you feel more confident and satisfied with your profession.
