They were in love with each other for eight years. While Binu George, 33, is from Kerala, Xiaoje Maria, 28, is from China. Curiously, what united them was German language.
“It was eight years ago at Bonn University, Germany, that I met Xiaoje. We were both doing computer science course. We fell in love with each other. Since I could not complete the course, I switched over to B.Sc (Nursing) while Maria completed it.
It was German that brought us together as Maria is weak in English. Later we reached Vienna, Austria, in search of jobs and I got a job in a hospital as a nurse, while Maria got a bank job,” says Binu.
Both the families were happy about their union. “We came here two weeks ago for the betrothal,” says Maria in broken English.
The marriage was solemnised at St Rocky’s Church at Manikkamangalam in Kalady partly in German by Fr Varghese Pudussery, who is an expert in German.
Xiaoje Maria was accompanied by her father Zhenren Ding and mother Jie Hua Yang, both of whom are doctors, and brother Qiao Ding, who is a programmer.
While Maria has been following the Catholic tradition, her parents are Buddhists. The couple is planning to have their honeymoon in Agra and Jaipur before leaving for Vienna on January 8.
