It’s the season of trophy tours in India with Carlsberg UEFA Euro 2012TM, DHL Manchester United Champ19ns Trophy Tour and the Star Movies Oscar® Trophy Tour. However, while most of these tours, including Manchester and Oscars, would be restricted to the Indian metros, Hyderabadis might just get a chance to see the UEFA trophy in the city as part of Carlsberg’s “vote to get the trophy to your city” initiative. With Hyderabad still lagging behind in the online Facebook voting race and Kolkata taking the lead, is the city youth eager about the big cup coming to the city or not?
Debanjan, an employee of D.E. Shaw says, “Since Indian cricket is not doing so well right now, it’s a great chance to increase football’s popularity in the country and spread it to other cities, not just Kolkata. Hyderabad needs such promotions and the trophy as event managers will look at Hyderabad as a platform to promote football and we might just see some games here too.”
Ashley Andrade, the captain of Deloitte Hydera-bad’s football team feels that, at the end of it all, these are just trophy tours and are rarely accompanied by players or matches. “It’s always nice to see footballers playing live in your city instead of just getting to see the trophy. Nevertheless, it will be a good change for the city that has quite a football fan following. It will help the game in Hyderabad.”
Shlok Pasbola, one of the founding members of city’s Manchester United Football Fan Club, is looking forward to the Manchester United Cham-p19ns Trophy. “Trophy tours are great, especially when they come to India. The Manchester United Champ19ns Trophy tour are also likely to bring along a few greats like Andrew Cole and Bryan Robson along,” he says.
