Exercising our rights

Sixty four glorious years of Independence. I must admit that freedom most definitely is a wonderful feeling.

All of us are blessed to be born in a free country and to enjoy the rights that we do.

Years ago numerous men and women gave up their lives to free our nation from the British rule and to this day we are reaping the benefits of their struggle and martyrdom. However, it is a fact that today we take our freedom and rights for granted. The Indian Constitution has empowered all Indians, but at the same time, some end up abusing the power too.

Just the other day I was the victim of an individual who took advantage of his right to freedom of speech to publicly embarrass and ridicule me. Moreover, all this happened on national television! The man in question, who from now I shall refer to as Mr Moon, clearly overstepped the limits of what to say when and where, and to my agravation, had no regard or respect for the event at hand or the people concerned.

It was further uncomfortable as I had to stand right next to Mr Moon hearing him diss me in front of an audience. I had to somehow smile through the excruciating process and then continue on as if nothing happened.

Let us not forget to give due respects to the man who chose to exercise this vital fundamental right to rip me and my work apart onstage, for being one of the most talented and highly respected actors of our film industry.

I guess I am just lucky that I am not scarred for life because of my thick rhino skin. I can just about imagine a teary eyed me running out of the stage weeping at being insulted by such a stalwart or even worse me getting back at him. An eye-for-an-eye, a tooth-for-a-tooth.

But somehow I just couldn’t do that either. I had a job at hand and had to complete it. It wasn’t my day or Mr Moon’s. It was the grand finale of one of the finest musical reality shows for kids and they were the stars. The focus had to be on them, not some slanderous statements made by a man pining for attention.

I enjoy the same freedom and rights every other Indian citizen enjoys and till the day I die, I will exercise them. Nobody has the right to tell me otherwise, and even if they do, like in this particular instance, I am sorry to say that the only thing achieved was some cheap publicity and the loss of respect for a so called brilliant actor.

I guess all of us have heard about "Your freedom ends where my nose begins." For those who haven't heard: On July 4th, 1776, when American Independence was declared, people were singing and dancing on the roads. During these celebrations, one drunk punched his neighbour on his face. When the victim questioned the aggressor on his action, the drunk said, “America is independent. I am free to do anything that I wish, which includes punching you on your nose.” The victim’s reply to this was “Your freedom ends where my nose begins.” Freedom is power and Spiderman would say, ‘With great power comes great responsibility’.
Miss Anchor has freedom to speak Malayalam in whatever accent she likes. After all she has been to Bangalore and UK. She probably does not remember the period before Y2K when she used to speak Malayalam minus the accent. The culprit might be the voice and accent training that she went through, where they teach you to speak proper English. When you train your tongue to speak proper English, it might forget the other languages. She cannot be blamed for exercising her freedom to make a mockery of her mother tongue.
Mr. Moon for his part is a comedian. Making fun of people issues and things is his bread and butter. He is a lover of the language. He has acted in over 1000 movies and all of them in Malayalam, except one in Tamil. Probably a decision that he might have repented later. I would like to see that more or less like a seven year itch. His contribution to the language includes several new words that he has coined. These words have become so common now that people don’t even realise that these words are relatively new in origin and have been coined by a comedian from the Malayalam movie industry. He exercised his freedom to criticise Miss. Anchor and her many others who are following her lead.
Though he did not say anything directly against Miss. Anchor, she like all of us realised that she was the target and exercised her freedom to write against it.
What is my role in all this? Well, me being a common man, I am responsible for all this. I encouraged Mr. Moon by liking him as a comedian and giving him a feeling that whatever he says will be taken as humour. I encouraged Ms. Anchor by liking her when she presented the show with her heavily accented Malayalam. I encouraged both of them to believe that they are the best and then lead them to the same stage where the clash was inevitable. Now I am enjoying the fight. That’s me the common man.

Yep, Jagathy clearly over-stepped.

I am personally not a fan on Ranjini, but my parents are. Its a family show and IMHO, she is doing a good job.

Anamika 08/11/2011 - 02:15pm

I support u Ranjini... You really rock... You are the best anchor in malayalam channels...

Jason 07/11/2011 - 01:12pm

Ranjini was my senior at school, Kerala spoke highly of her when she won Miss Kerala.

Im not a big fan of Idea star singer, but my grandma sure is, she is in her 80's. The reason I state this is because my grandma has a fondness towards Ranjini knowing she studied in my school e and a friend. Like anyone of her age, she did voice her concern about the clothes Ranjini wore etc, then again i think all of our parents have voiced concerns about how we behave in public, the clothes we were etc. However despite that, even my Grandma feels the undue attention and abuses hurled Ranjini's way is quite unwarranted.

People keep whining about Ranjini's accent thats how she's spoken always, on TV her accent might be exaggerated , but try facing an audience and host a show that is aired around the globe, more often than not you are more animated in your delivery. (Besides nearly every NRI has picked up an accent... )

People keep whining about her murdering our language, and destroying our traditions and culture, while in the shouting out profane (sexual) abuses... ummm YES THAT IS DEFINATLY IN LINE WITH MALLU CULTURE!!..

Kerala men by and large, give the whole state bad name... because our men are sexist, we our overly self righteous, and best know for our hypocratic social policing.

WHY dont you just mind your business and let people carry on with their lives.

Idea STAR singer nor Ranjini is forcing you to watch their shows. You always have the option of switching channels (we have so many of them) or switching of your TV, spend some quality time with your family or friends.Instead most ppl just waste their time throwing filthy abuses at others.

The truth is being an anchor is no easy task...A show like Idea Star singer, has continued to keep Ranjini and pays her quite well for one reason alone, because by and large people love her as the host of Idea Star singer.

What is exeedinlgy hilarious is that the very people who bad mouth and spread wild rumours of Ranjini, become completely different people. when given the change to take a pictures with her, take her autograph or a change to speak to her, they transform to be her undying fans/admirers...

But the moment she doesn't give them the attention they want, she become a whore, it is this kind of behavior that our women have to face whether its in school, college, at work or as housewifes, its no wonder that Keralite men have such a bad reputation when it comes to the opposite sex...

People need to quite judging others, infact if you feel the need to judge, then judge yourself by the same standards as you judge others and you would realize what a big hypocrite you are.

Rather that preaching about culture and shouting out profanity, If you really wish to save or preserve our cultural, social or traditional values then practice and let it reflect when you voice your opinions.

Thank you, very much!!

who the hell told you that he just achieved some cheap publicity and loss of respect? He spoke for the whole malayalees and he said what we all wanted to say.Someone should be there to respond publicly against cheap dramas and third class communication style of anchors who works as an intermediate between viewers and a program. What Jagathy Sreekumar did was absolutely right thing.

JJV Kuwait 02/11/2011 - 03:23pm

Congrats for the timely “high-quality mannerism” from your end, by not reacting at the moment either wise, tooth-for-tooth or getting emotional. That was really great of your talent as an anchor. We have no doubts in your ability as an anchor. Your journey through ISS has really set a standard for the profession.
I agree that most malayalees do not have doubts in Jagathy’s acting ability too. He too has taken the industry, as a comedian, to an excellent level. But Jagathys sarcastic comments and his advice for the proven anchors were quite disheartening. A good actor need never be a good anchor and vice versa. It’s not must that he succeed as a good anchor (I have good example of KBC). Hence, to comment on issues were you do not have knowledge or expertise is unwise and stupidity. Sorry to say that, many in the industry does the same, talks about anything under the sun.
Please take my humble advice Ranjini, whatever has happened has happened. You have proven your potential as an anchor, now concentrate on your work and let this issue not brood you or your character. No more comments in the public or the media in this regard. Silence is a good way to react for such incidence as your adverse party is very popular and vociferous. The people watching ISS love you (including me and my family) as you are; hence, there is no need for any change in your characterization (may have negative impact). Awaiting your acknowledgment.

MR.Moon, here, is not up in the sky...he is a genius, well known and down to earth person. they observe keenly before they speak. If u hav rhino skin take it as a word of advise... not dissssssssss.....

Dont expect praises from all ,,,,always... Introspection is always indispensable

RAMACHANDRAN 11/10/2011 - 05:00pm

I am not a big fan of Ranjini Haridas’s,but I think Jagathy sreekumar was being a sexist acting the way he did. TO begin with he made some comment about ‘avatarika’s not having the right to predict who should be the winner of the show…who is he to say that? if the IDEA star singer organisers have no problem what is his bloody problem?

And all these mean comments about ‘purity’ of language..there is no written law that states that everyone has to speak ‘pure’ malayalam- She has every right to speak the way she wants to. If you hate her so much, dont watch the show! if idea star singer finds it objectionable they would have fired her long ago.

there are also some comments which say that Mr. Jagati sreekumar was not referring to her specifically in his comments. Maybe its the case- but he certainly was talking about ‘avatarikas’ of her type…and it was a warning to those types to sit up and take notice.

Anyway, my position on the whole matter is Ranjini- chin up and keep going!!!

Ravi Menon 08/10/2011 - 11:35pm

What Jagathy Sreekumar said was right. I do not understand why Asianet still keeps Ranjini as the anchor for ISS. Her so called English is gramatically wrong always, she must never comment on a performance, she need not lip sync when someone sings. Please remove her and get someone like Sruthi Menon or Akhila.
