
One look at cricketer Manpreet Gony, and one can be excused for believing that he is sure to have star hang ups. And, he has every reason to. He is one of the best cricketers around and the newest recruit into the Deccan Chargers team. A few minutes of conversation with him, and his true persona shines through, of a down to earth and determined youngster.
Having found success as a bowler, batsman and fielder, what can the audience expect of him this IPL? “I have my dreams set and I will work towards them. My priorities are with the team, I want DC to lift the cup this year. So, that will be my focus. And I need to prove myself as a cricketer. Keeping my last time’s performance as the benchmark, I intend to perform even better.”
His journey so far hasn’t been easy, as he had a tough time convincing his parents about his passion for cricket. “My parents were not happy that I chose cricket as my profession. They wanted me to take up a real job but my elder brother stood by me. He was my support system throughout.” His performance in the previous IPL tournaments has made him a household name and propelled him to star status. “It feels great when people recognise me and come over to talk to me. It feels like heaven. I still haven’t got over this feeling. Kids point out to me, call out my name and ask for autographs.”
A true-blood Punjabi, he admits to being a diehard fan of Punjabi music. “When I am not playing, this is what I indulge in. I listen to Punjabi music and I also love Bollywood music.” When asked who he finds most attractive among the Bollywood actors, he swears by Kangna Ranaut. “She is a beautiful actress and person. I met her last year in Kolkata and found her attractive and extremely down to earth.” he says.
In a country where boys grow up playing cricket, it requires extraordinary talent to get noticed. So what is his message to the millions of boys, who dream of making the cut? “There is no substitute for hard work. I believe that if we work wholeheartedly towards something, we are sure to achieve success. Keep at it, don’t lose hope. Only perseverance can help you make your mark in the field.”
