Night rules no bar

Night rules no bar

Enough has been written and said about the city’s nightlife, or the lack thereof. In the light of recent events, such as the eve teasing incident at Mahabalipuram, it seems that most nightclubs in the heart of the city are abiding with the 10.30 pm closure deadline.

However, other nightclubs located outside city limits are openly flouting this rule.

A number of nightspots in Chennai are absolutely oblivious to such a thing as the ‘last drink rule’ and provide their clientele with a chance to boogey and violate the rules. In fact, such clients also have the opportunity to indulge in some unacceptable activities too.

We caught one such individual who, under conditions of anonymity, said, “A couple of night spots on the outskirts of the city function way past the stipulated deadline. And usually, whatever happens in the club stays in the club. The cops don’t seem to bother much with these places. But, there are also clubs in star rated hotels within the city that are open past the deadline.” So, has there been a relaxation of the rules that we don’t know of?

Chennai City Police Commissioner, J. K. Tripathy, clarifies, “There has been no relaxation of the rules. Neither has special permission been granted to anyone to remain open late. Those who violate the rule will be brought to book,” says Tripathy with an air of determination.

This discrepancy in enforcing the rule has attracted the ire of club managers in the city. Says R. Anand Krishnan of Star Rock, “Yes, clubs outside city limits seem to enjoy a more relaxed rule. This is definitely unfair. There should be a common time that is strictly enforced through the board.

"The cops should consider extending the deadline as its affecting business, especially with the expat community.”
