It’s time to reuse, recycle and share – at the Second to None community there is more in store than just this. It’s a flea market, where people come, interact and sell used goods! It’s an initiative by Reena Chengappa, Shilpa Kamath and Anu Gummaraju.
“We were approached by one of our friends, who wanted to raise funds for a documentary. We decided to organise a flea market, where used material would be sold. We didn’t know if people from our cultural spectrum would be open up to something like this. But to our surprise, through the Living Garage Sale, we raised Rs 30, 000 for the film,” says Reena, co-founder, Mysunnybalcony.
The first full-fledged market was held at Jaaga last month. “And the response was overwhelming. This makes me genuinely believe that there is always support for a good cause,” says Shilpa. The next market will be held in October. “The intention is to bring experts from various fields — to speak and engage a larger audience — share their views on conservation and recycling,” says Anu.
At the Second to None market you’ll find people selling everything from jewellery, shoes, clothes, books, handmade souvenirs and sport gear. You learn about waste management, conservation and a few artistic tricks that help you reuse the junk you want to scrap. Reena says, “People were asking for the size of a dress and not caring about how old it is.” Adds Anu, “We’re trying to bring about a lifestyle change where people shop consciously. Through the flea market and workshops we want people to reconsider their consumption and disposal patterns.”
