For centuries, man has been constantly striving to defy the process of ageing. But the quest for the elixir of immortality has been in vain. And yet there are individuals in the world untouched by the ravages of time. As our ancestors did, we too refer to them as sages or wise men, who through their intense focus attain an aura of invincibility that transcend aging.
The precepts of Tibetan yoga are somewhat similar. The concept of Shathayu Bhava, which means ‘live for a 100 years,’ lies at the very core of this discipline. Instead of putting a complete stop to the process of growing old, the discipline tries to slow down the process of ageing. In fact, I discovered this phenomenon quite a few years ago when I met a few Tibetan lamas during one of my journeys to the Himalayas. I was astounded to see two young men who didn’t look more than 30 years old. But when I spoke to them they revealed their ages were 123 and 87 years respectively.
The monastery of the Tibetan lamas is located deep in the Himalayas and is still a mystery to many.
During the course of my experience with Tibetan yoga, I found that employing simple exercises like controlled breathing, relaxation and meditation, could unlock the doorway to good health, longevity and youthfulness through the union of body, mind and spirit.
If you think about it, on a very fundamental level, ageing occurs due to anabolic and catabolic activities in the body. As one grows older, the anabolic (building up) activities decrease and the catabolic (breaking down) activities increase. And today’s generation, which is used to living at the speed of light, is ageing much faster than its predecessors, owing to the increasing levels of work and lifestyle pressures. The Tibetan lamas practiced a form of yoga that aims at setting one’s endocrinal system and chakras in perfect order.
Bringing about a balance in the metabolism, thereby slows down the wear and tear of the human body. Once the chakras begin functioning at their best capabilities, the body begins its visible ascent into youth. The end result of such psycho-spiritual exercises is a heightened state of awareness and an equality among the three fundamentals necessary for human sustenance — i.e. IQ (intelligence), EQ (emotional) and SQ (spiritual).
