South Asian Games: India take medal tally to 122

Hosts have taken their gold medals' tally to 76 gold medals.

Guwahati: India plundered most of the gold on offer for a fourth successive day with swimmers, archers and track-and-field athletes ensuring that the host country’s top position on the medals tally remained unchallenged in the 12th South Asian Games here on Tuesday. Continuing their terrific show, Indians took their overall medal count to 122 (76 golds, 36 silvers and 10 bronzes).

Shuttlers soar

It was yet another day of Indian dominance in badminton as they remained on course to make a clean sweep in the singles, doubles and mixed pair events.

The Indians won all that came their way without even dropping a set. The famed doubles duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa beat Sri Lanka’s Chandrika De Silva and Nadeesha Gayanthi to ease into the semis; Kidambi Srikanth and H.S. Prannoy made it to the Round of Four in the men’s singles beating Ahmed Thoif Mohamed of Maldives and Murad Ali of Pakistan respectively.

P.V. Sindhu, who received a bye to the quarters, took just 15 minutes to beat Maldives’ Aishath Afnaan.

Bronze for Dutee

In the women’s 100 metres, Dutee Chand — who trains under Hyderabad’s N. Ramesh — bagged a bronze medal. Sri Lankan R. Rathnayaka sprinted her way to gold in 11.71 seconds ahead of India’s Srabani Nanda (11.72) and Dutee, who clocked 11.75.
