50 sailors in fray as Telangana sailing kicks off today

The championship has attracted more than 50 sailors from across the country from many states notably from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Sailing Association is organising the 2nd Telangana State Sailing Championships from Sunday at the Yacht Club of Hyderabad at Hussainsagar lake. Competitions will be held in three categories -- Junior, Youth and Senior. Trophies will be awarded for the State and Open levels. The championship has attracted more than 50 sailors from across the country from many states notably from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

“We are proud to host the 2nd Telangana State Open Sailing Championship with many more entries this year making all categories extremely competitive,” said Lt General K. S. Rao, president of the Telangana Sailing Association.

Koteshwar Rao of Telangana will be the sailor to reckon after securing a silver medal at the just concluded Hyderabad Sailing Week. Local lad Goutham Kankatla, who was the State Sub-Junior Champion in 2016, will take part in the Junior category and will vie with Masti Saibaba for places on the podium in the State championship.

In the Youth category, Tanishq Desai of Telangana and sister Juhi Desai are the favourites. Both Tanishq and Juhi had won the Junior State Championship trophy last year.

As always, the largest contingents are Army and Navy based as the sport is supported by these forces in great measure.
