Manohar Aich, India's first bodybuilder dies aged 102

He won Mr Universe in 1952, three gold medals at Asian Games.

Mumbai: Manohar Aich, former Mr Universe and three-time gold medallist in bodybuilding at the Asian Games, died aged 102 in Kolkata on Sunday. He was the first bodybuilder from independent India.

The centenarian, known as ‘Pocket Hercules’ due to this short height (4 feet 11 inches), clinched the Mr Universe title in 1952.

Aich started training in 1942 during his tenure with the British Royal Air Force.

He never escaped training and maintained his physique even in old age. The exact reason for his death is unknown but according to reports, it was due to complications which result from old age.

Aich is survived by two sons and two daughters.
