Women's hockey star found dead on Haryana railway tracks, suicide suspected

Jyoti Gupta's body was found near the Rewari Railway Station, Haryana, by the locals, who informed the police.

Gurgaon: Indian hockey player Jyoti Gupta is suspected to have committed suicide, after she was found dead on a railway track near Rewari Railway Station, Haryana, on Wednesday.

Gupta’s body was found near the railway tracks by the locals of the area, who informed the police.

The 20-year-old, who was a resident of the Sonepat district, played as a forward for the Indian women’s hockey team. She had also represented India in the Asian Games.

While the cause of her death is yet to be ascertained, a possible case of suicide is suspected after the driver of the Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express had informed the Railway Police that she had “suddenly appeared” in front of the train at around 8.30 pm, according to The Times of India.

Jyoti had reportedly spoken to her family around 7pm, to inform them that she would return home late, as her bus had stopped. When her mother called her at around 10.30 pm, a railway police official picked up the phone to inform her of her daughter’s death.

Gupta had attended a three-month-long coaching camp in Shilaroo, Himachal Pradesh in June, ahead of the World Hockey League Semifinals in Johannesburg, which was held last month. She was set to join another training camp later this month.

The India forward had reportedly gone to a local coaching academy in the Sonepat Industrial Area on Wednesday morning. She had informed her parents that she had gone to Rohtak to get some corrections done on the class X and XII marksheet.
