Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata to host the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup final

Navi Mumbai and New Delhi are set to host the opening games of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, on 6 October, 2017.

Kolkata: The Yuva Bharti Krirangan in Kolkata, better known as the Salt Lake Stadium, is all set to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup final, on October 28, 2017, announced the FIFA inspection committee, on Monday.

Kolkata, one of the few cities in India, which generates as much craze over the ‘beautiful game’ as the rest of the nation does for cricket, will now host, what is set to be the most historic moment in the history of Indian football.

The FIFA inspection committee went around the country to scrutinise all the six venues – Jawaharlal Nehru Stadiums (New Delhi and Kochi), Fatorda Stadium (Goa), Indira Gandhi Stadium (Guwahati), DY Patil Stadium (Mumbai), and the Salt Lake Stadium (Kolkata) – before announcing the venue for the final.

Earlier media reports suggested that either Kolkata or Mumbai will host the final.

The FIFA inspection committee also announced that the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, will host the opening games of the tournament, on October 6, 2017.

Goa, Kochi, Guwahati, and Kolkata will host the four quarterfinals (October 21-22), while the semifinals will be hosted by Mumbai and Guwahati (October 25).

FIFA also unveiled the official slogan of the FIFA U-17 World Cup: “Football takes over”.
