Watch: Wankhede greets ICC World Cup 2011 hero MS Dhoni back with a standing ovation

Thala gets an auspicious welcome at the place he made history.

Mumbai: 2nd April 2011 – This date will forever be etched in the memory of fans at the Wankhede Stadium as India clinched their second World Cup trophy after a span of 28 years.

That night, they found a new hero in MS Dhoni, who made India’s challenging chase possible and also scored the winning runs.

As international cricket returned to Wankhede with India taking on New Zealand in the 1st ODI of the three-match series, the Wankhede faithful got a glimpse of their hero once again as he walked out to bat. The swashbuckling right-hander was greeted with a standing ovation.

After Dinesh Karthik provided Virat Kohli with some much-added support with an impressive cameo of 37 for the 4th wicket, Dhoni carried on from where he left, settling well at the crease and looking set to finish the innings.

However, didn’t last long as Trent Boult struck once again to silence the cheerful crowd at the stadium. Dhoni attempted to smack a delivery from Boult over point, but could only find Martin Guptill at the point region and was sent packing for 25.

Earlier during training on Saturday, the 36-year-old was also seen practicing his World Cup winning six.
