Mumbai: Former India skipper Kapil Dev believes that MS Dhoni must continue leading the Indian side in ODIs and T20Is.
The Virat Kohli-led Indian Test side is unbeaten in last 17 Tests and are playing some very impressive cricket. Many have argued that Kohli should takeover the captaincy responsibility from Dhoni in the shorter formats. However, the 1983 World Cup winning captain thinks otherwise.
“Dhoni is still going great guns in limited overs. He chose to walk away from Tests despite being good enough to play for a few more years. That was a selfless act as not many cricketers who have played 90 Tests would choose to leave in the way he did. And, it wouldn’t be prudent to put too much pressure on Kohli,” said Kapil Dev.
The legendary all-rounder also opined that Dhoni has earned the right to retire from the game at his will.
“I think we should give Dhoni the freedom to decide how long he intends to play and lead the team. He has done quite a lot to deserve that respect,” he said.
