Swara steps in for Sammy

Sammy recalled that he was called ‘Kalu\'

In the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests worldwide, West Indies cricketer Darren Sammy, in an emotional social media post earlier this week, had revealed that he was subjected to racial slurs by his Sunrisers Hyderabad teammates during his IPL stints in 2013 and 2014. Sammy recalled that he was called ‘Kalu’.

This has caught the attention of actress Swara Bhaskar, who insists that he deserves a formal apology. Soon after he posted the video, Sammy’s former teammates clarified to him that the term was used out of affection.

However, Swara, remained unconvinced, and claimed that Sammy was getting gaslighted. Sharing Darren’s video, the Raanjhana actress wrote, “I think IPL team @SunRisers owes @darensammy88 an unconditional apology 4 repeatedly addressing him with a Hindustani/Hindi racist slur (which he didn’t know the meaning of) and laughing! Disgusting & unacceptable! And Daren it IS derogatory even when used in jest or affection!?!”

In a Twitter exchange, Sammy wrote, “Don’t get me wrong I’m not condoning what was done/said. I’m saying let’s use this opportunity to educate each other so it doesn’t happen again. One can only apologise if he/she feels wrong about something. I’m confident&proud to be black. That will never change.”
