Mohammed Shami helped India beat NZ while his daughter was in ICU

Shami's 14-month old Aairah, who had high fever and had trouble breathing, was admitted to a hospital and moved to the ICU on October 2.

Mumbai: Indian pacer Mohammed Shami played a vital role in India’s 178-run victory against New Zealand in Kolkata. Shami picked six wickets in the match to help India reclaim the top spot in ICC Test rankings.

The bowler was virtually unplayable on the 4th day of the Test. As Shami took the final wicket of Trent Boult, the Indian players and cricket fans broke out into celebrations completely unaware of the fact that the bowler played the game despite her daughter being in the ICU.

According to media reports, Shami’s 14-month old Aairah, who had high fever and also had trouble breathing, was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata and moved to the ICU on October 2.

Shami was informed about this at the end of second day’s play. The bowler, reportedly, rushed to the hospital at the end of play each day to be at the side of his daughter.

Aairah was discharged from the hospital on Monday and the good news was conveyed to Shami at the end of the match.

While Shami's on the field performance was laudable, the emotional state he was in makes it even more praiseworthy.
