Mumbai: England Test captain Alastair Cook is all set to break former India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s record. He is 36 runs away from being the youngest man in history to score 10,000 runs in Tests. The Indian batting icon achieved the feat in March 2005 against Pakistan in Kolkata, a month before his 32nd birthday.
Cook turned 31 on December 25 last year and if he scores 36 in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Headingley, he will pocket the record five months before the Master Blaster did.
He will also become the first English cricketer to reach the milestone. The stylish left-hander has scored 9,964 runs in 126 Tests at an average of 46.56.
The Test specialist – who also plays for Essex – has been in a terrific form. He recently slammed two hundreds and a half-century against Sussex.
He made his Test debut against India in 2005 and since then, has cemented his place as a successful opener in the England cricket team. He also helped England win the Ashes in Australia in 2011, and then – 2013 and 2015 in England.
Cook captained the England team to victory in the Test series in India in 2012.
