Hyderabad: Telangana police are yet to provide security to badminton star Saina Nehwal despite a CPI-Maoist threat to her. The Left Wing Extremists recently issued a warning to celebrities who financially supported the families of CRPF jawans who were killed in an ambush in Chhattisgarh in March this year.
TS Intelligence Security Wing Inspector General of Police M K Singh said, “We haven’t received any information on providing personal security officers to badminton star Saina Nehwal.” Ms Nehwal, a native of Haryana, lives in Hyderabad. A senior Intelligence Bureau officer said, “Maoists issued the threat letter a few days ago. TS police shall provide security to her.”
Ms Nehwal and Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar had extended help to the families of 12 CRPF jawans killed by Maoists in Sukma in Chhattisgarh in March this year. Former director-general of the CRPF, K Durga Prasad, said, “Celebrities are magnanimous in coming forward to support the jawans who died in the attack. They have understood that CRPF men are sacrificing their lives for the country and the tribals. The support by celebrities like Saina and Akshay motivated others to help the cause. The Maoists have seen that people are galvanising for the cause. Maoists resorted to a foolish step by issuing a ridiculous warning to celebrities.
