Isro's storm data helps save lives, catch fish

India is saving up to Rs 15,000 crore every year by issuing alerts to fishermen about cyclones.

HYDERABAD: India is saving up to Rs 15,000 crore every year by issuing alerts to fishermen about cyclones and when to venture out into the seas, and informing them of the location where fishing would be good, said Isro chairman Dr A.S. Kiran Kumar. He said how the Indian Space Research Organisation had zeroed in on a fishing hamlet in Thumba near Thiruvanantha-puram for establishing a space station along the coastline few decades ago.

The church priest persuaded the locals that navigation satellites and weather based information provided from the centre would benefit society, after which they offered land, Dr Kumar said while speaking on the subject ‘India in Space’ on the second day of the Osmania University centenary celebrations. The Isro chairman later inaugurated the Advanced GNSS Research Laboratory at the OU College of Engineering.

The laboratory was established for research and for students to do projects. The laboratory was developed under a memorandum of understanding between the OUCE and Isro’s Space Applica-tions Centre at Ahmedabad.
