Edible milk-based film an answer to plastic wraps

Researchers at the US Department of Agriculture have pioneered an efficient covering to keep your food safe and fresh, made out of milk.

Keeping food fresh means wrapping it with edible wraps and the best answer today is plastic wraps. However, all that synthetic packaging is clearly having an adverse effect on the environment.

While most of the containers for packing food can be recycled today, plastic wraps are still a major concern. Researchers at the US Department of Agriculture have finally pioneered a highly efficient covering to keep your food safe and fresh, and the best part — it is made out of milk.

The new film is edible, biodegradable and works 500 times more efficiently in keeping oxygen out. The film is made from a protein found in milk, called casein, and can be combined in powder form with water to form the basis of the new packaging material.

Additionally, glycerol and citrus pectin are added to make it soft, resist humidity and high temperatures. These wraps, being edible, can also be tweaked with vitamins and flavourings for taste.
