Telangana fourth in solar power generation

Hyderabad: Telangana State stands fourth in the country behind Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu in terms of solar power generation.

According to the Union power ministry, the state is generating 1,287 MW, against the state government’s claim of 1,758 MW. This is against a target of 5,000 MW.

After the advent of solar plants and open access system, the distribution companies in the state have lost 1,000 MW in sales. The state government is reportedly delaying giving permission to solar plants, it is also going slow in allowing commercial and industrial establishments to purchase power through the open access system.

South Central Railway and Hyderabad Metro Rail had requested the TS government to allow them to purchase power through the open access system. Both proposals are pending with the state government.

The state has no separate wing for the solar power sector; the TS Southern Power Distribution Company has made the nodal agency for solar power. In all, 1,547 registrations for solar power were made with proposed capacity of 40,910 KW but it has released about half of them. 

The state government has decided to add another 3,000 MW of solar power in the next there years. The proposals sent by the TS New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation on setting up of solar plants are pending with energy department.
