The Pirate Bay founders lose final appeal in Swedish SC

The founders of the popular torrent source website, The Pirate Bay, have been ordered to serve time in prison and pay millions of dollars as fine by the Swedish Supreme Court.

Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundström, the three men behind the site, have lost the legal battle. They are not allowed to file any more appeals.

All three of them are Swedish nationals.

It is been few years since the criminal trial started and all the three aforementioned along with Gottfrid Svartholm were booked with copyright infringement offences.

The court’s verdict indicated that three of them were found guilty. They were also asked pay millions of dollars as fine.

Though the Swedish Court of Appeal decreased prison sentences in November 2010, Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundström were ordered to pay to the plaintiffs, entertainment companies.

Hoping to change this verdict to a favorable one, the three founders filed for a hearing at the Supreme Court. This request was rejected and the last decision determined by the Court of Appeal still stands.

According to that, Peter Sunde (Brokep) has to serve eight months in prison, Fredrik Neij (TiAMO), faces ten months while Carl Lundström has the lightest sentence of four months. They all have to pay cumulative damages of 46 million kronor ($6.8 million).

Anyhow, none of them have to go to prison, as Swedish justice system allows 12 months to be deducted from the prison sentences following trials that last more than 5 years.
