The one-day bandh called by Dalit organisations and student bodies passed off peacefully barring some sporadic incidents in the city. The bandh was called to protest the desecration of statues of the Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar in various places across the state. While educational institutions were completely shut in the city, shops and other commercial establishments remained open. RTC buses also registered almost hundred per cent presence on the roads.
In one incidence of violence, a bus belonging to a private operator was set on fire at Chilkalguda main road early in the morning, but no other such incidents were reported. A fire tender managed to douse the fire within half- an-hour. The interior of the bus was gutted. The owner of the bus, Mr Ghouse Pasha, from Venkateswami Nagar, Chilkalguda, has lodged a complaint and police is investigating. In the OU campus, students burnt an effigy of the chief minister. Police stopped the rally at the NCC gate. The security ensured that the students remained within the campus.
