Police books HC lawyer for assault

A lawyer and his gang allegedly attacked a person and his family after intercepting their vehicle on the Kerala High Court premises on Tuesday.

Cops say the attack on the family was carried out by one Gireesh John, who practices at the High Court, along with his colleagues. The lawyer ’s original target was Shaji, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, said police.

Shaji, who sustained minor injuries in the attack, had reached the court to arrive at a compromise with a woman who’d filed a case against him seeking financial compensation. Police said Shaji, who’s already married, had an illicit relationship with the woman of whom he has a child.

According to police, Gireesh, the lawyer engaged by the woman, had demanded Rs.15 lakh as compensation for his client to arrive at an out-of-court settlement.

Police said Shaji refused to pay the money which angered the lawyer leading to the attack.
When Shaji started to leave the court premises accompanied by of his wife and brother-in-law, he was pulled out of the car by Gireesh and his colleagues, police confirmed.

As a crowd gathered, Gireesh accused Shaji of trying to kill him by running his car over him. Gireesh was soon joined by his colleagues and police said they assaulted Shaji.

High court security personnel arrived on the scene and took control of the situation. Police said a case has been registered against Gireesh and six other persons based on Shaji’s complaint.
