When it comes to talent, be it computer engineering, composing music or directing films, Rupam Samah, is a man of many talents. His latest venture, the documentary In Search of God, catapulted Rupam into the world of movie direction and even won him laurels from the film fraternity. Not every movie director receives an award for his very first production. However, Rupam won the award for the best documentary movie in the Indian Film Festival held in Houston, USA, and has been nominated for an Oscar in the Original Music Score Category! “The movie is worth all the appreciation that it is getting. It has a unique topic and it is something which is very close to my heart.” he says.
The movie is about how an Indian, born and brought up in the US, finds peace after returning to her roots. About the response the movie received when it was screened in the US, Rupam says. “It was difficult for them to grasp the topic as there is more or less only one religion in the US, unlike here in India. The movie revolves around the concept of how all religions lead to one God. However, after screening the movie, there were many who came over to say that the script really touched them,” he says.
So, what made him switch from computer engineering to music direction? “I was always into music and for me there was a connection between my technical job and music,” he says. In the movie, the protagonist finds God. But how does Rupam seek the almighty?
“Working in this field gives me immense satisfaction and happiness. I think being in this creative field helps me connect with myself and with God,” he says.
His next mission is to work in Tollywood movies. He says, “I love coming to the south and working in movies here. There are many superstars like Chiranjeevi and Rajnikanth.”
