Age dispute

The dispute over the birthday of the Army Chief has taken an ugly turn. Mentioning false birth dates to meet stringent criteria for admissions was rampant in the 50s and 60s. In many cases, the birth certificates were unavailable or lost in floods. For birth dates, a authentic document like the SSC certificate should be given weightage. For sensitive positions like that of an Army Chief, the capability of the person should be considered and not the DoB.

NOT AN INCIDENT
The Babri Masjid did not collapse due to heavy rains or electric short circuit to be termed an ‘incident’ (Famous? Babri demolition is just an incident: Court, January 17). A large number of people gathered to demolish the masjid and hurt the feelings of many peace loving Muslims. The comments of the SC judges are unpalatable.

EDUCATION REPORT
The annual status of education report presents the government with something to think about (RTE fails to up teacher-pupil ration, January 17). It serves as a wake up call for officials who make tall claims about development. Instead of playing the blame game, everyone should coordinate for a brighter future for the students.

PLEASING MINORITIES
Every political party is trying to appease the minorities to get votes during elections (Mulayam eyes Muslim votes in UP, January 17). The former UP chief minister should fight for implementation of the recommendations of various commissions and then seek Shahi Imam’s support.
