Cocktails to warm the cockles

The mercury seems rather content being where it is, showing no intent to get up and scorch us once again.

But for those who aren’t enjoying the chilly weather, and wish for a nice warming sundowner to help them get through another cold night, we get Rahul Joshi, F&B manager at the Intercontinental in Marine Drive, Mumbai, to divulge some of the best cocktails his bartenders have concocted.

Rahul, while guaranteeing that these cocktails will ensure warm cockles, says the key lies in making liberal use of spices, and using warm water as the primary mixer instead of colas.

Hot Fashioned

Ingredients:

60 ml bourbon
A dash or two of Angostura aromatic bitters
A sugar cube
An orange slice
1 maraschino cherry
Club soda to top it up
Hot water
Orange slice and cherry for garnish

Method:

Place a sugar cube at the bottom of an old-fashioned glass.
Add three dashes of Angostura bitters directly to the sugar cube.
Add a slice of orange, one cherry, and a splash of soda.
Muddle thoroughly.
Remove the remnants of the fruits.
Add the bourbon and ice.
Top off with warm water.
Garnish with a fresh orange slice and a cherry.

Winter Commando

Ingredients:

60 ml cognac
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
A dash of Angostura bitters
Lime peel for garnish

Method:

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, and pour all the ingredients into it.
Shake it well.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a lime peel.

Tokyo Tonic

Ingredients:

A pinch of wasabi
60 ml white rum
Lime juice

Method:
Shake all ingredients together.
Serve in a salt-rimmed old fashioned glass.

RX Korenge

Ingredients:

60 ml dark rum
Juice of half a lemon
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cherry liqueur
A dash or two of Angostura aromatic bitters

Method:

Pour the rum, lime juice, sugar and liqueur into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Shake well.
Strain into a cocktail glass.
Add the Angostura bitters on top.
