The mayor, Mr Tony Chammany, on Thursday, said the decision to chop trees at Panampally Nagar would be reviewed in the light of protests.
He, however, refused to commit that an alternative would be found to save the trees.
A meeting of nature- lovers, environmentalists, local residents, students and teachers was held at Panampilly Nagar High School on Wednesday to take a pledge to save the trees.
Of the 15 trees in the school compound, five face the axe from the city corporation, which is planning to construct drainage.
The meeting was inaugurated by the principal of Thevara College, Rev. Fr. Prasanth Palackapallil. Environmentalists Prof Gopalakrishna Moorthy and Prof S. Seetharaman addressed the gathering.
