Maestro spins magic

Harris Jayaraj at the concert
Harris Jayaraj at the concert

The second leg of Harris On the Edge, a concert in Coimbatore, had everything going for it: a dazzling array of lights and LED screens, an exhilarating orchestra, the Tamil film industry’s leading vocalists and of course, the crowd’s deafening cheer accompanied the music in joyous abundance.

It was a theatrical high straightaway as Harris Jayaraj made a startling entrance in a steel capsule suspended 35 feet off the ground, and fireworks shooting out of his guitar! A particularly loud riff from him serenaded Krish and Sunitha on stage singing Adiye Kolluthe in a fast tempo.

Next in line were Benny Dayal with Pudhu Pudhu, and Haricharan crooning Palapalakara with Harris taking center stage and conducting the music and joining in the chorus occasionally! Karthik followed up with a brilliant improvised-rendition of Ghajini’s Oru Maalai and had the entire ground dancing to the popular Anjala.

Harris paid tribute to the late director and friend, Jeeva, with Anbe en Anbe rendered by Aalap Raju and hummed by Megha, who literally owned the stage during her Vaseegara solo and Suttum Vizhi duet with Vijay Prakash.

Also outstanding was Sunitha Sarathy with her seductive Thoodhu Varuma fantastic and effortless vocals that rang through the night air. Chinmayi, in a gorgeous red dress, seemed to have a lot of fun, lending her dulcet tones to Kalyanamthan kattikitu and Oyaayiye along with Benny and Haricharan.

M. Satyan’s Randaka with Swetha Mohan, Devan’s unplugged acoustic version of Iru Vizhi Unnadhe from Minnale, Rahul Nambiar’s Nangai, performances from Sricharan, Vandana and Sharmila were also memorable.

A rousing highlight was Krish and Harris singing Nanban’s En frienda pole yaaru machan, with actor Jiiva joining in!

Harris waved and said, “I thank all my musicians for pulling off an amazing show. Thank you Coimbatore for being so wonderful!”
