Rajahmundry: The on-going stir for unified AP is said to have had its impact on the growth of IT sector in Godavari districts in the last couple of months.
With the STPI coming into existence in the year 2007 at East Godavari collectorate, the activity picked up momentum and even made significant development in IT and ITEs exports in the last few years to various destinations.
With a few crore rupees during the year 2007-08 the activity under tier-II category made good progress in exports to various destinations, including the US and Canada and by the year 2011-12, it could reach Rs 35 crore worth exports.
After the economic recession has had its impact, the IT companies were able to find new markets in European countries, including Switzerland, apart from the existing ones.
Many new IT companies started their activity in the last couple of years in both East and West Godavari with onus falling on Rajahmundry as new IT hub with more than eight units coming into existence, making the total to 38 units in both the districts.
West Godavari district contributes with two units to this total at Tanuku and few more are expected to come into existence soon at other places in the district In the IT- SEZ promoted by APIIC in 15 acres of land as part of development of the activity by AP government in Kakinada suburbs, the Infotech company stated its unit more than a year ago in it.
Besides this, the IT tower which is under construction is expected to provide the added fillip to the activity. With all this under its belt, the IT units in the two districts would be able to exceed 50 per cent export target of Rs 40 crore for 2012-13 by achieving Rs 62 crore exports of IT and ITEs to various global destinations. But the unified AP agitation is said to have hampered the establishment of new units by prospective entrepreneurs.
When contacted, the East Godavari APIIC general manager Krishna Murty said the IT tower under construction will come into existence in the next couple of months to accommodate new units.
