A couple from Puducherry, who ran a matrimonial site, were arrested for acting as customers of their own site and luring bachelors to subscribe to their portal.

The arrested were identified as Prasanna Venkatesh, 34, and his wife Chitra, 32.

“The two were running mudhaliyarmarriages.com and to make their site more profitable, Chitra started calling up people (who had advertised in other sites and newspapers) posing as a subscriber of mudhaliyarmarriagescom.

She identified herself as Akila and invited Vijay of New Washermanpet to register on the website so that he could view her profile.

“Vijay registered himself on the said portal after paying `2000 but later found out that the identity of Akila was fake and that he had been taken for a ride,” the police said.

Vijay then lodged a complaint with the city cyber cell about the incident. During the probe, the police found that portal owner Ms Chitra had been talking to Mr Vijay posing as Akila and had forced him to register his name on the matrimony site.

“Vijay was not the only victim. We have received similar complaints from a few others as well,” the police said.
