Breaking all conventional concepts of Malayalam filmmaking in 2011, director Rajesh Pillai came up with the movie, Traffic — it sent shock waves across the industry.

Leaving behind the clichéd concepts of family-oriented plots and stories revolving around love triangles, his film dealt with the different facets of a single incident. It was initially difficult for the Malayali audience to accept such a concept. But the trend picked up.

The success of Traffic in Kerala has kicked off a new trend in Mollywood and the popularity of films like and Salt n’ Pepper, bear testimony to that.

“Ask me about the 10 best movies in Malayalam of all times, Traffic will surely be one among them,” says Anand Pillai, a student from Palakkad.

According to Jinisha Jayan, a film student, Malayalam cinema is at the peak of its creativity.

“I could sense the signs of novelty germinating in our industry since the release of Big B. Amal Neerad’s cinematography gave a new look and feel to our cinema,” she says.
