Kozhikode: The three-year-old Tamil girl sexually assaulted by unidentified persons in Tirur on Monday night remained in a critical condition at the Kozhikode medical college hospital ICU. Her overall conditions was stable but she was having serious internal injuries, said Dr. N.C. Cheriyan at the hospital.
The girl was sleeping along with her mother on a shop veranda when she was abducted and sexually assaulted by some men who later abandoned her on the compound of the Mahila Samakam building in Trikkandiyur. “The girl underwent two emergency surgeries. Her condition is stable, but faced a risk of infection,” Dr. Cheriyan said.
The Malappuram police has taken 16 persons into custody on Wednesday but their involvement has not been confirmed. “Interrogation of those under suspicion is on and we are taking all steps to identify and arrest the culprits,” additional director general of police (north zone) Shanker Reddy said.
Women’s commission chairperson Rosakkutti visited the girl and her mother at the hospital on Wednesday. She said the culprits should be brought to book as early as possible. “The women’s commission would take care of the woman and child after the treatment”, she said.
