New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was on Sunday appointed as the leader of Congress in the Rajya Sabha. He will be the Leader of Oppostion as the Congress is the larg-est single party with 67 members, in the upper house.

The party played dalit and minorities  cards wh-ile appointing its leaders in the two Houses of parliament in the new role of ‘Opposition’.

While the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi appointed  Mallikarjun Kharge, the dalit leader from Karna-taka as the leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, she is relying on Mr Azad  to play this role effectively in the Upper House which will decide fate of number of Bills of the Narendra Modi government .The BJP’s current strength in the Rajya Sabha is 42.

Anand Sharma, another former Union minister,  was made deputy leader of the party, in the Rajya Sabha.
