New Delhi, Nov. 18: Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Mr Nandan Nilekani, said the scheme will be extended to include Non-Resident Indians.
Speaking at the Indian Women Press Corps, Mr Nilekani explained that under the dual citizenship, NRIs who own a place of residence in India will get this 16-digit number that will be unique to them.
The scheme, the largest of its kind in the world and which is expected to provide biometric details of fingerprints and photograph of 1.2 billion Indians, will be used to confer benefits to the poor availing the NREGA and other programmes of social uplift, Mr Nilekani said. The main challenge facing the UIDAI team is how to work out the verification standards for such a large population.
“Eighty per cent of the problem lies in verification of identity. The verification committee, headed by former central vigilance commissioner N. Vittal, is working to provide this fundamental infrastructure and is expected to submit its report in three months,” Mr Nilekani said.
He said the UID number will give an identity to India’s huge population and especially the poor by ensuring there is no duplication of people.

The UniqueID project could be moving fast with pressure from the western powers. Once you have the ID, western corporations can lend the money to Indians easily, now they can track you down with this ID if you default. They will give credit cards way beyond an individual's means. With these credit cards you go out to the big malls and buy forgein brands happily. You will be a sucker on both ends. Once your credit limit is max, you will end up making minimum payments with high interest rates on the credit cards and will never be able to repay the full amount. Now you cannot default on the loans as your credit history is tied to this new ID. If you have a bad record then you will not be able to buy anything in your life. Economic ghulami is on the way... but is anyone going to listen? I doubt it because we are living in the world of instant gratification, giving away peace of mind for a piece of the pie.
Nobody asked for it. They want nothing but management over people that are paying their salaries.
UIDAI is going to be counter productive. Given the corruption levels in our society it will be very easy to falsify documentation using someone else's identity. Basically this will become a meance called "Identity theft". The value of a person will be lost because human beings will be treated as a 16-digit number rather than as a person. When you treat human beings based on numbers then other factors such as her health, her circumstances etc will not be taken into account while dealing with her. In the context of India, the current system is the best where we have a certain level of documentation in terms of ration cards and a level of human interaction. Do not make it 100% machine or 100% human, the combo that we currently operate is best suited to our way of life.
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) chairman Nandan Nilekani should identify a few people who are dedicated and focused on the project. There should be no political interference and it should be an independent body funded by the central government. UIDAI will help in multiple ways and help in infrastructure, employment, economic support system to the disabled and aged and uplift of the needy.
It must be a common person identity and as stated no politics please even in the funds allocation
