New Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday convicted a man and his girlfriend for throwing acid on the mother of his divorced wife two years ago.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Bansal held Shah Nawaz and his girlfriend Raziya guilty of causing grievous injuries to Pyari, the mother of his former wife, by throwing acid on her face and upper limbs.
"The intention of both the accused to commit the offence is also proved by the fact that the witness (victim) deposed that accused Raziya caught hold of her and accused Shah Nawaz threw acid on her from a bottle," the court said.
It also referred to the statement of Shah Nawaz's divorced wife who deposed that she saw Shah Nawaz and Raziya running away after the incident and threatening her of meeting the same fate.
"The conduct of the accused in committing the crime together and then jointly fleeing amply prove beyond reasonable doubt their intention to commit the crime," the court said referring to the victim's medical records showing acid burns on her face, trunk, upper limb and chest.
According to the prosecution, Shah Nawaz allegedly harboured ill-feelings against Piyari for prompting her daughter to divorce him.
The court is likely to pronounce the sentence against both the convicts on December 21.
