Bride kills self after marriage

A day after she got married, a 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide over dowry demands in Nadia district of West Bengal, police said.

The body of Juthika Das was found hanging from the ceiling fan of a room at her father's house in Kuti village around 5 am, they said.

The victim's father Priyalal Das told police that his daughter's had demanded a huge dowry and just before the marriage ceremony at 11 pm, the bridegroom's side had insulted him in public for non-payment of the entire money promised.

The bridegroom Bipul Talukdar, an unlicensed medical partitioner, also joined in the dowry chorus, police said quoting Das.

Talukdar has been detained, they said.
