March 11th, 2010

March 11: Faced with dissidence over the women's bill, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said it will issue a whip to its MPs to support the proposed legislation in the Lok Sabha.

"All the MPs will support the decision taken by the party leadership. A whip will be issued," said the party leader, Ms Sushma Swaraj, the leader of the Opposition in the lower house.

She added that all BJP MPs will support the party's decision to back the bill, which seeks to reserve a third of all seats in legislature for women.

Ms Swaraj was speaking to reporters after a meeting called by BJP leader and former deputy prime minister, Mr L.K. Advani, following reports that the party was divided over the women's reservation bill.'

There are hundreds of MPs like Gorakhpur MP, Mr Yogi Adityanath, who are going to defy the BJP and Congress whips. Both parties will become laughing stocks soon. The Manuwadi elements in both BJP and Congress, who have bent on suppressing Dalits and other under privileged section of India, are responsible for this undesirable turmoil. Congress and BJP are not bothered about terrorism, unemployment, sky touching prices, threats from numbering countries like Pakistan and China, but shown keen interest in gifting political positions to their women only. The reservation bill to accord 33 per cent reservation of seats in the LS state legislatures in the country is a historic decision with an aim to give the opportunity to women in the country to be the partners in the power structure. But how many women from backward communities, SCs, STs and minorities will take the advantage of the bill if no reservation is given to them in the 33% earmarked for women in the country? Obviously most of the 33% seats will be captured by the women from the upper caste, as the women from the weaker sections can not compete with affluent and educated upper caste women in the elections. We all know how elections are fought in the country with money bags. There fore, the very purpose of the bill is defeated if it is passed and implemented in the present form. The bill in the present form is the hand work of upper caste leaders mainly both from Congress and BJP to gain further dominance in politics and power sharing. They are playing this drama in the name of reservation bill for women. Samajwadi Party, RJD, LJP and other parties who represent the cause of weak sections are absolutely right and proven their responsibility in stalling the bill. They are not against the bill, but insisting the reservation for weaker sections with in the 33%. Their action is justifiable and appreciated by all right thinking people who have concern for the welfare of women in the country in general. The leaders from all political parties should oppose the bill in the present form, particularly the congress and BJP leaders from weaker sections from all over the country should ignore the Congress and BJP whips.
