New Delhi/Ahmedabad, Nov. 30: The Gujarat High Court was on Monday restrained from hearing the case of Ishrat Jehan “fake encounter” any further by the Supreme Court after the mother of the Thane teenager sought a probe by the CBI into the death of her daughter.
The High Court, which had listed the case for urgent hearing on Monday after Ishrat’s mother Shamima Kauser moved the top court, was stopped from hearing the case by a bench of Justices B. Sudershan Reddy and Deepak Verma.
“The proceeding in the High Court be stayed. It has not heard the case for the past five years but now it is listed for urgent hearing today when this court is seized of the matter,” alleged Ms Kauser’s counsel, Ms Kamini Jaiswal, while seeking justice to her client who had lost the college-going 19-year-old girl in the alleged fake encounter by the Gujarat police on June 15, 2004, which branded them terrorists.
The apex court directed the Gujarat government to submit its detailed reply by December 7 to enable it to proceed further in the matter. Ms Kausar in her petition had sought action on Ahmedabad metropolitan magistrate S.P. Tamang’s report.
