Sitaram Yechury denies VS Achuthanandan sending letter on Mani

The CPM general secretary said that the matter had been left to the state committee.

Thiruvananthapuram: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday said that he had not received the letter from veteran party leader V S Achuthanandan demanding removal of power minister M.M. Mani.

He was responding to questions from media persons at central party headquarters in Delhi. The CPM general secretary said that the matter had been left to the state committee. “The party has already taken a stand on the issue that they will appeal to a higher court and the Kerala party will decide on that matter,” he said.

A section of central leaders believe that there was no need for Mani’s resignation as the case was politically motivated and foisted by the previous UDF Government based on a speech. They felt that had it been a corruption case, the question of resignation could have come in for discussion.

Achuthanandan had reportedly sought Mani’s removal on moral grounds saying that a person accused in a murder case holding a Cabinet post in CPM led government would send a wrong signal.

Even though the central committee has left the matter to the state leadership, if the veteran leader insisted on a discussion on the issue as he had done on a number of matters in the past, the central committee will have to take a call.
